Volunteering at Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai — rescued elephants living as elephants should, searching for wild herds near the border, and the rescue dogs who still shape how Sophie works today.

One of the most meaningful volunteering experiences I've had was in Thailand at Elephant Nature Park.
Elephants have always been my mum's favourite animals, so convincing her to fly halfway across the world with me to see them felt very special. It made the whole experience even more unforgettable.
Elephant Nature Park is an ethical rescue and rehabilitation sanctuary for elephants who have been saved from riding camps, logging, street begging, circuses, and other forms of exploitation. Many arrive with both physical and emotional trauma, and the focus is on giving them a calm, natural environment where they can heal and live peacefully.
We helped with daily chores such as sorting huge amounts of fruit and vegetables, preparing food, and even sorting through dung (which is definitely not the glamorous side of volunteering 😅). We also spent time walking with the elephants and simply observing them being able to live as elephants should — forming friendships, playing, and making their own choices.
One of the most incredible parts of the trip was meeting the founder, Lek. She is such an inspiring person and has dedicated her life to rescuing and protecting these animals. For our second week, she invited us to join her and her team near the border to search for wild elephants. The aim was to provide food and support so they stayed away from farms, helping to prevent conflict and reduce the risk of them being harmed for wandering into local communities. It was a powerful reminder of the reality of wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting both animals and the people who live alongside them.
The park itself felt incredibly natural and peaceful. Alongside the elephants, there were also rescued buffalo wandering freely around the sanctuary, which you could often go and see as they explored and relaxed in their own space. It really showed how the focus is on giving all animals a safe and calm environment to simply be themselves.
Whenever I had any free time or breaks, I spent as much time as possible volunteering with the rescue dogs on site. Many of these dogs had been rescued from the streets or difficult situations, and helping to walk, socialise, and support their recovery was incredibly rewarding. This experience gave me a deeper understanding of how environment and trauma affect behaviour, something that continues to shape the way I work with dogs today.
We also attended lectures from Lek about the ethics of elephant tourism. It was eye-opening to learn just how harmful riding and performance industries are, and how there is really no such thing as "ethical riding." True sanctuaries prioritise the animals' welfare, choice, and dignity above everything else.
This experience had a huge impact on me and continues to influence the way I approach animal care every day.
